Pilgrim Kids and Youth Update February 2022
We are so thankful to share with you that retired minister Mary Ferris will be stepping in to volunteer with our children and youth when Adrienne leaves in May so there will be no gap in our youth or children’s ministries! Mary will be working with Adrienne during the next few months as we prepare for the upcoming transition. Below is a letter from Mary highlighting the exciting Sunday School curriculum we will be starting as soon as we are able to meet in person again.
Turning our faces toward Lent and Easter
In anticipation of returning to in person worship, the staff and CE Steering committee are preparing for in person Sunday School for our children and youth Lent through Pentecost . We will be using the Godly Play curriculum called I Wonder. This is a Montessori based experiential curriculum to help children discover the depths of their own spirituality. It helps them discover where they fit into the Great Story of humankind.
The Easter through Pentecost lessons are especially powerful for laying the groundwork for progressive theology while at the same preserving the wonder and mysteries of Easter. There will be take home handouts for anyone wishing to explore these lessons for themselves.
Following the presentation of the story, the children will be practicing as an Easter choir with Adrienne as part of their response time. We are preparing response material for older elementary children as well as younger grades. The youth will help us with the crafts, the feast and the recreation time, as well as having a discussion time for themselves with these lessons.
We will need a team of volunteers to help prepare and execute these lessons. We will maintain the same teachers and timeframe as always, but extra help will be needed and much appreciated.
1. If there are persons with experience with the Godly Play method please contact Adrienne Armes.
2. We will need people to help prepare ahead of time the crafts involved and help lead the exploration time. Volunteering for even one Sunday would be a help. If you just wish to prepare the crafts, that is fine as well.
3. If anyone has a small communion set we could borrow this would be appreciated.
Please contact Adrienne or the church office if you wish to volunteer.
As we get closer there will be more items that will be needed for certain. Thank all of you for everything you do to make Pilgrim a true church family.
What to expect – our Children and Youth ministries at Pilgrim
Children
Children of all ages are invited to join their families in the Sanctuary at 10am for worship. After a Children’s Sharing Time, kids are dismissed to age appropriate outdoor Sunday school classes.
Youth Ministry
We want to be the church in the world, sharing in God’s love and justice throughout our community. These ministry opportunities include beach cleanups, meal distributions, fruit harvesting, participating in marches and parades, educating the community through forums, and so much more. Our youth meet weekly in person during church.
Christian Education
Through the stories of the Bible and the stories of our lives, we search for who God is for us today, and how we can participate in what God is doing in the world.
