The reading from Psalm 10 expresses the laments of those effected by terrorism. How can God allow such suffering? On the anniversary of 9/11, we try to understand how a mistranslation of the word virgin can lead to terrorists believing they will be rewarded with 72 virgins for these violent acts. The true translation of the Arabic word is raisins. In the Koran, heaven is described as a lush paradise just as it is described as a land of milk and honey in our bible. Such misunderstanding can lead the more radical elements of all religions to acts of terrorism in the name of religion. A quote by Nietzsche talks of men never doing evil with more enthusiasm than when they do it in the name of God.

We must remember that the same force that drives Muslim extremism can be found in Judaism and Christianity. Revenge is not the way of God’s people. Religion can also be used to end terrorism. The Psalm claims that the terrorists are the true atheists. Those that commits act of terror cannot possibly believe in God. Religion can help end terror by spreading the truth about who is religious and who not. Jesus taught that you belong to God. We must render to God what is God’s. The second way religion can help end terrorism is by making God’s realm international. Nationalism means nothing to God. The last way religion can help end terrorism is by strengthening the hearts of the meek. God gives hope to everyone effected by terrorism. Terrorists will be held accountable by God. We are called to love and peace with encouragement and hope. We are called to care for one another. In this way, terrorism will be defeated.
