The theme of tonight’s meditation is “How can this be?” There are only two gospels that have a birth narrative, Matthew and Luke. They approach this story from two distinct perspectives. Matthew recounts the story from what was revealed to Joseph, the man’s perspective. Luke recounts the story from what was revealed to Mary, the woman’s perspective. Mary was approximately 13 years old when she receives the news from the angel that she has been chosen to deliver the Savior.
Her biggest question is “How can this be?” She is in disbelief. How can a little boy born to a little girl be so important and do so many incredible things? Today we ask about how our world can have so many great achievements while children starve, wars rage, and people suffer. How can the world see all that the angel promised Mary? The answer is that the Holy Spirit shall come upon each of us. Together we can make this hope a reality.
