Due to recent events, we must question whether we are truly safe in church or at school. We especially want safe spaces for our children. Safe spaces are not just about physical safety but also emotional safety too. One cannot have one without the other. Churches, synagogues, and mosques have been attacked recently. Our problem is how to reconcile our faith with being safe. An answer come to us from Psalm 23. God leads us in right paths. We can be doing God’s work but still find ourselves in dark valleys. We find peace and comfort in God’s presence. We are the light in the darkness. In these recent shootings, unarmed people of faith have stopped the gunman. Our church also is home to Temple Etz Rimon. We must walk through this valley of darkness with them. We share the burden with them. We sit in the presence of our enemies yet we gather in joy and faith. This is our choice as a people of God.
