Today we celebrate the accomplishments of Dr. Rebecca Lee Crumpler and the artist Jean-Michel Basquiat. Doctor Crumpler was the first African-American woman to become an American doctor. In addition, she was an accomplished nurse and author. She tore down walls of stereotypes and racial barriers. Artist Jean-Michel Basquiat gained fame during the late 1970s as part of the graffiti duo known as SAMO, which combined elements of the hip-hop, punk, and street art movements in Downtown Manhattan. His art style was contemporary art and Neo-expressionism. He was an inspiration to all with his dynamic artwork often depicting historical black figures with crowns and halos.
